Dalam kitab Hilyah al-Auliyâ wa Thabaqat al-Ashfiyâ’, Imam Abu Na’im al-Ashbahânî (330-430 H), terdapat sebuah riwayat tentang nasihat Imam Zaid bin Aslam (w. 136 H) kepada anaknya, Abdurrahman bin Zaid. Berikut riwayatnya: حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن محمد، ثنا الحسن بن محمد، ثنا أبو زرعة، ثنا زيد بن بشر الحضرمي، ثنا ابن وهب، حدثني عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم، قال: كان إبي يقول: أي بنيّ. وكيف تعجبك نفسك، وأنت لا تشاء أن تري من عباد الله من هو خير منك إلا رأيته، يا بني، لا تري أنك خير من أحد يقول: لا إله إلا الله حتي تدخل الجنّة ويدخل النار، فإذا دخلت الجنّة ودخل النار تبين لك أنك خير منه
